Clinical use: This score can be used to estimate the probability of CMV infection in acute exacerbation of ulcerative colitis based on 5 predictors.

Cytomegalovirus reactivation is common in patients with severe colitis. Disease duration, - activity and – extend as well as the use of steroids and anti-TNF-a agents were identified as risk factors (p < 0.05 each). Based on these parameters a significant correlation between the predicted and actual rates of CMV infection was found (AUC: 0.858; 95% CI 0.791-0.924; p < 0.0001).

Our study supports the pathogenic relevance of CMV in ulcerative colitis. The predictive risk score estimates the risk of CMV infection and might aid in clinical decision making, especially when timely modifications of therapeutic regimens are needed and reliable diagnostic tools are not readily available.
